Can’t drink alcool anymore because of my liver which is already tired due to an excess of iron in my blood (genetical condition). It was a bit hard to start with, I use to enjoy a good wine with my diner, but got used to it now, and the positive side of it is (at the opposite of stopping smoking), I lost a good bit of weight

I have had them for the last four years. I find that when I have them I have several over a few days.

For me, they arrive when I am tired or stressed.

They can be big enough that I am unable to see normally and I have no option other than to rest while they pass. Normally 15-20 minutes.

Now I just accept the fact that I get them from time to time. I have no other side effects.

Understanding what they are helps – at first, I was worried I had a detached retina!

The same for me Lun Bugel, quite often one is followed by an other. I had two in 6 hours the other day, and still unconfortable with lights few days after.

It’s incredible how many of us have it ! About what I read, if the flashy zig zags last more than one hour, you need to see a doctor asap, because it could be something else.

I’m sorry to hear that you all have this problem .

Myself I drink a little coffee in the morning, a lot of water all day , a little wine in the evening and a lot of chocolate before I sleep . Seems to work , although I think this condition is hereditary ? :-)

Indeed babeth, back in June Mrs G on a Saturday evening started to complain about something similar.  After rushed hospital appointments it was discovered she had a detached and torn retina.  What she had to undergo was quite nasty to be aware of. Basically  it involved having some gas injected into her eye ball, after having had her torn retina siliconed back together.  She then had to remain laying down in such a way as to facilitate the gas  to  disipate from the inside of her eyeball. It took 4 weeks for the gas to completely leave the inside of her eye, and she had to wear a bracelet informing medical people of her condition. She was told under no circumstances to go in an aircraft during that time.  She was told she was very lucky they just caught things in time.

Me driving her to the hospital with a still badly fractured metatarsal didn’t help her nerves either

Oh yes, and the injected gas was to re-infate the retina back into position or something like that.

I get two versions. When I suffer the ocular or retinal migraine, it always affects the left eye and with a kind of flash, it takes out the peripheral vision to halfway across my eye. There’s no pain or headache, thank goodness, but the first time it happened, it scared the s…e out of me. Bright sunlight can start one off. Just as well I live in Brittany. ;-)

With visual migraines, I have zooming around flashing zig zags and then along comes a mega headache. Only way to get over it is bed, darkness and 800mg Ibuprofen. The flashing gradually eases and is not so annoying and I then tend to nod off, thank goodness. Never worked out what triggers them, oddly, never really thought about it. As dear old mum suffered with them, they’re a hand me down though.

That was a terrifying experience for Mrs G @gleaner! Hope all is well now.

It’s surprising how many of you are suffering from different migraine conditions! Our son-in-law does, with him I think they’re triggered by stress and the only way he can cope when he gets one is to take tablets and go to bed, which in turn adds to his stress because of letting clients down and dealing with a backlog of tractors waiting to be repaired!! Vicious circle!

Interesting thread Babeth. I don’t get all of the visual things, light sensitivity and intense pain, normally left sided which builds for several hours until I vomit and that seems to release it, sometimes it just then goes, other times lasts a day or two. Hormonal a big link but digestive and stress I think is biggest, stomach and migraine seem closely linked. Valerian tincture in some soda water and a hot water bottle on the tummy does give some relief. No idea though if the ocular ones are the same, they sound much shorter but much more debilitating.

If you warm some salt in a pan and fold into a flannel and put on the back of the neck that seems to help too.
