Topcat  asked.Would like to know where the UK Government ministers are getting their information from, there has been no official reports from any medical source in France about this Beta variant rise.Looks like it is yet another one of the UK,s right wing/gov media,s peevish party politics games that they have been playing since Brexit. like to know where the UK Government ministers are getting their information from, there has been no official reports from any medical source in France

Yes there has the info is available. The Beta variant represents 3.4% of cases in Mainland France. In Reunion and Mayotte it is around 100% but they are 10000kms away. Beta + Gamma represent 7.3 %
I suspect someone in the U.K. didn’t analyse the data sufficiently

It is unbelievable what is going on here. Don’t watch main stream media because this corrupt rotten government is controlling it either by threatening it’s funding or refusing to put forward ministers for interview if they don’t toe the line. The imbecile and his minions are putting legislation through the back door of parliament with emergency laws under the cover of covid. These traitors are evil and out of control and are hell bent of destroying what is left of our country. Free speech is at risk, pretti useless patel(aka totally useless patel) is trying to stifle free speech and make even peaceful protest illegal. It is unbelievable what is going on.

Watch youtube if you don’t believe me.

By all means challenge me if you think I am wrong but I will come back with this post in the future and I will apologise if I am wrong.

I haven’t watched mainstream “news” since last March last year, when even then it was clear that what we were being told, and told to do, didn’t make sense, especially when the people who were doing the telling didn’t have a clue themselves. Lesson learnt? Do your own research from independent sources, and use your own instincts and common sense.

    So endeth today’s sermon!

Same here. I stopped watching main (old) stream news over a year ago and predicted what was coming. Sometimes I hate being right!

Sent to me by a friend in Australia

If you see me wearing a mask in public and in the stores, I want you to know that…
I’m educated enough to know that I could be asymptomatic and still give you the virus.
No, I don’t “live in fear” of the virus; I just want to be part of the solution, not the problem.
I don’t feel like the “government controls me”. I feel like I’m an adult contributing to security in our society and I want to teach others the same.
If we could all live with the consideration of others in mind, the whole world would be a much better place.
Wearing a mask doesn’t make me weak, scared, stupid or even “controlled”. It makes me caring.
When you think about your appearance, discomfort, or other people’s opinion of you, imagine a loved one – a child, father, mother, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even a stranger – placed on a ventilator, alone without you or any family member who is allowed at his bedside.
Ask yourself if you could have helped them a little while wearing a mask.

It gets worse and more laughable , according to a U.K. lawyer the restrictions don’t apply to residents of La Reunion where the Beta variant accounts for 95% of cases. These cases are included in France’s statistics If the U.K. govt had looked at the stats for France Metropolitan they would see less than 8% and falling.

As i said, thick as two short planks!

I think the same people worked out the stats that did the WFA calcs a few years back.

    In tonight’s news,

    or

A spectacular increase: 18,181 new cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the last 24 hours in France, according to the latest data published by Santé publique France on Tuesday 20 July. This level of positive cases had not been seen since mid-May. A week ago, on 13 July, 6,950 new cases had been identified.

Doesn’t matter if it’s Beta or Delta, it’s still Covid. :-(

I had a look at the UK Column website and it’s mainly pseudoscience and conspiracy theories. It’s run by a guy called Brian Gerrish, who is a typical right-wing conspiracy theorist and denialist. He has appeared on Alex Jones’ radio show (for those who don’t know, Alex Jones is a major US far-right conspiracy theorist).

Adherence to consiracy theories really is the lowest form of critical thinking. Large-scale press vehicles are indeed flawed, but they are mostly far better than the likes of UK Column. I have never understood the desire to replace imperfect sources of news like the BBC with perfectly predictable sources of lies.

I lived in Brazil from 2009 until 2020 and over that period observed an extraordinary degradation in the quality of public discourse and in belief in reality. “Belief in reality” may seem hyperbolic but it is not; straightforward facts were replaced with insane conspiracy theories promoted, largely, through YouTube. These idiotic views became widespread and led directly to the election of Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency in 2018.

The ensuing years have seen the utter debasement of the country. Large parts of the Amazon have been transformed into a charred ruin. Education has been massively defunded. Scientists regularly receive death threats. Journalists are murdered on a regular basis. Supreme court judges are constantly under threat.  Brazil’s Covid death numbers speak for themselves – and this in a country with a massive medical-industrial base, the world’s largest public health system and a history of successful reponses to major tropical disease outbreaks.

The UK is someway down the same path. Promoting conspiracy theories and their disseminators is to join with the very worst in human society in seeking the worst possible outcomes for us all.

There is some truly dreadful pseudo political stuff being pumped out by Youtube and the likes. Anybody and their dog seems to be able to post stuff on there and the damage that it’s doing is terrible.

Conspiracy theories are a danger to us all since they are basically just that – theories. People get sucked in by them because they can’t face the reality of real life going on around them and would rather bury their heads in the sand and pretend it’s not happening.

But they feel that they have to have an option – anything will do. This is where the conspiracy theorists come in and the the problem is that, by allowing them to have a voice, the theorists are made to feel important. Fed by their egos, their views become more and more extreme and more and more dangerous.

I try to watch the BBC News most days – I think that, by and large, it does a good job and is mainly impartial. News reporting, by its very nature, will not reflect everybody’s point of view – but I believe it gives you the facts and from that you can make your own judgements. This is what most level headed people are able to do.

It’s a shame that there are so many that can’t because they, in themselves, aren’t doing the rest of us any favours.

I personally will not take any news story as the truth. Lots of them have their own agenda and put also put out stories at certain times that appear to co-incide with governmental decisions. I am not a conspirisist as I trust most of the theories even less than I do the news stations and pages.

I have been in the news a fair few times myself over the years and have seen first hand the rubbish that has been written about me or the situation I have been in and know that a lot of it is rubbish.

Sensationalist journalism annoys hell out of me, like the recent journalist who covered her dress with mud whilst reporting about the recent floods. She should not be allowed to work again after being caught for that.

Like many on here, I will sift through all the truths that are facilement accessible and try and figure out what the truths are. More transparency would be good :-)

Fraser “……………Adherence to consiracy theories really is the lowest form of critical thinking……………………..”

I disagree.  It is simply what many people use as a replacement for thinking.

Widespread acceptance of conspiracy theories is a product of the growing distrust in governments everywhere.  When you see examples of lies, corruption, and misleading statements coming from government on a regular basis you tend to not believe the “official” political brainwash any longer.  This opens up an opportunity for any crackpot with an internet connection to propose his alternative reality.  Most people are too busy trying to get on with life in sometimes difficult situations and don’t have the time or inclination to try to fact check everything they hear or read.  This is a very dangerous and destructive scenario.  UK is now a divided population over Brexit and political ideologies led by a corrupt government during a severe pandemic.  Anyone got any good news that will withstand a proper fact check?

Anyone can post on youtube within reason. Yes, although there are certain codes of practice which have to be adhered to or the post will be removed. Having said that you are free to watch  what you wish and make your own mind up, you are not limited to the filtered MSM which only allows what the politicians and the political press want you to see and hear. When you are more selective about what you watch, there are some very knowledgeable independent political analysts who broadcast on youtube and back up their reports with footage of speeches etc, giving an insight into what is really happening behind all the lies, bullsh*t and smokescreens of today’s gutter politics. These are not conspiracy theorists, just people in the know reporting what they see before it is all censored for public consumption.
