Top Ten Family Attractions in Brittany

A land of myths and legends, Brittany is a region with a true spirit of adventure so there are plenty of attractions for active children, whether they like dinosaurs, the world under the sea, zoo animals or even far away into space.

There are historical villages and a fairy-tale chateau to explore too, if the past is on your list of things to explore. There are some wonderful local dishes that children will enjoy including cakes, crepes, and the more adventurous there is moules frites which is mussels and chips, the Breton equivalent of the British fish and chips. For the parents there are many beautiful seafood dishes and a boule of local cidre to wash down their crepes.

1/ Chateau De Fougeres
Who is the King of the castle? The children’s imaginations can run wild at this medieval enchanted castle. This is the one of the largest surviving fortresses in Europe. There are beautiful views across the Breton countryside as you stroll along the ramparts. The children will love exploring the many towers and turrets of this magnificent chateau.

2/ Adrenaline Forest
This is an amazing tree top adventure park located on the outskirts of Rennes. Adrenaline Forest is perfect for children that need to burn off lots of energy. There are eight tree top routes intended for ages 2 and over, the Black Panther route, 20m up in the trees and a kilometre-long route made up of five zipwires. There is something for every daredevil here.

3/ Oceanopolis
Children will be in their element by the underwater world of Oceanopolis with 68 aquariums filled with 10,000 marine animals from 1,000 species across the world. Seals, penguins, sharks, and thousands of fish from the tropical, temperate, and polar oceans all live here in Brest in this amazing sealife park.

4/ Village De Poul Fetan
If you want to discover Breton life back in the 19th century, then a trip to this restored village would be a perfect place to visit. You can watch people in historical costume as they demonstrate traditional crafts and techniques including butter churning, pottery making and wool spinning. You can also watch livestock being milked and there is chance to join in the demonstrations.

5/ Ile De Batz
A quick 15 mins ferry ride from Roscoff, this pretty little island makes a wonderful daytrip. You can find a peaceful spot on the beach or hire a bike to cycle round the island, which is around two miles long and less than a mile across. To add to its beauty there is a wonderful exotic garden with over 5,000 species of plants from five different continents.

6/ Zoo De Tregomeur
A sure-fire hit with kids must be a zoo. One of the best zoos in Brittany is the Zoo de Tregomeur. Along with a lot of conservation work there are also 50 different species, mainly from Madagascar and Asia. You can see camels, flamingos, big cats, gibbons and red pandas to name a few. To add to the mix there is authentic Vietnamese farmhouse which was shipped all the way here.

7/ Parc De Prehistoire De Bretagne
Meet some big monsters with your own little monsters at this outdoor dinosaur park. With 30 scenes featuring life size models of dinosaurs and prehistoric people as you follow the route through the park around lakes and into the rugged woodland. You can get up close with a stegosaurus, triceratops, brachiosaurus and more.

8/ Planetarium De Bretagne
The Planetarium de Bretagne takes you on a voyage into the mysteries of the stars. It is one of the largest planetariums in Europe. Watch in high definition the universe pass before your eyes as you look up at the domed screen. There are specific shows for children and some even have English commentaries on certain days.

9/ Village Gaulois
Step into the village of the Gauls and Druids and you will find many outdoor activities and games for children. Every year the village donates 60% of its profits to fund schools in Africa, so you can help fund a worthwhile cause whilst having lots of fun.

10/ Cite Des Telecoms
This telecommunication centre is both educational and fun. Children can learn about the history of telecommunications from pioneers like Bell and Morse to the satellite communications of today. There are interactive exhibits and games and a sound and light show inside the giant sphere, the Radome which received the first transatlantic television broadcast.
