I made a comment on another thread about the throw it away and buy a new one trend of today.

I thought it would be interesting and perhaps fun to find out what we have from yesteryear that still works.

I have a hand powered mincer from the 1930’s that is still like brand new, it has spare blades in greased paper.

We also have a Kenwood chef from the 60’s. We use it from time to time.

I have my Uncles technical drawing tools, in a lined steel box, each one engraved with his initials. The Spirit level which accompanies the set is marked 1918. Still useable today.

Do you know where they were made?

We have a Massey Ferguson 35 1957, works well and is used often, we also have another from 1964 still working well, Blacksmiths Avil from early 1900s on cast iron stand as good as the day it left the factory, we have a miners lamp from the early 1900 used down the mines passed down through the family still works today.

Seeing as we are talking about old stuff I rebuild a lot of vintage tractors and you know the workmanship and quality far outweighs anything modern

The oldest thing I have that still works sometimes?

MM…..but even he has off days.

we came back from our hair raising trip …arriving at midnight…to find our fridge doors open…a Siemens…it had broken down whilst we were away…it may be 18 years old ..a fridge freezer…it was in the house when we came 4 years ago…fortunately my lovely neighbour rescued all the frozen goodies…I had emptied the fridge on leaving…..

    New fridge freezer to find.

There was a fantastic MF on the classifieds on here recently, an absolute beauty. I have a Super Dexta not as nice as that though but everything works except the added flashing light.

I would love to see some old tractor photos. I have a friend in England who buys old tractors, eventually gets round to restoring them and works them as a contractor doing hay, hedges and suchlike.

Do you know where they were made?

I got the date wrong, 1917 made by John Rabone and sons of Birmingham

Possibly the oldest object that I have, that can be dated is a Stanley 45 combination plane inherited from my father. Like this but much earlier.

    stanley 45 combination plane

According to it’s features and the floral decoration it dates from between 1900 and 1910.

He probably bought it used around the 1930’s when he was working as a carpenter/cabinet maker.

It’s still in working order with all it’s set of 22 cutters. I  have used it once to do an awkward shaped job.

I have a stick blender that my mum bought in the 70’s at an ideal home exhibition.   She  didn’t use it much so gave it to me. Used regularly as we eat a lot of soup!
