So what would be your solution for dealing with asylum seekers, economic migrants etc crossing from France?

Simple immediate implication: process their application, and any subsequent appeal, in as reasonable short time as possible.

Medium term: Foreign aid to help developing countries so that refugees can feed their families, etc. Stopping or reducing foreign aid will exacerbate the flow of refugees.

Long term: stop selling the arms to countries that generate and cause the refugees.

But whatever the solution, vilifying the refugees will not help in the least, and certainly will not resolve a countries own internal problems. It’s just an excuse by a government that creates the internal; problems.

I don’t think that the present governement in the UK hate refugees Bobby , just certain ones ! This I conclude after hearing how many Hong Kong inhabitants will be moving to the UK , but then …… they are not classified as refugees I suppose. Will certainly upset China , but they ( UK governement ) don’t seem to worry about that .

I don’t think the British public can or will be able to discern the difference between Chinese and Hong Kong migrants. They’ll all get the blame for UK’s self-inflicted problems.

Taking one word or one comment from my post is really rather childish…

Like Harry G. Frankfurt said, and his definition of bullcarp: “Speech intended to persuade without regard to truth.”

Your comments, each of them, individually and together, intend to promote bigotry and are not based on true understanding of the legality of the situation. Your comments are based on bigoted urban mythology.

Now I don’t know if you were the first to introduce the issue of refugees arriving in UK, in this thread, but you’ve certainly exploited an opportunity to express your bigotry in a thread that was about Tim, his pubs and his difficulty recruiting staff.

Edit, I just checked, it was indeed you that exploited an opportunity to express your bigotry in an otherwise unrelated thread.

    Refugee hating…wow what a generalization.

Who the heck mentioned the phrase “refugee hating”? It certainly wasn’t me, so where did it come from? Someone’s vivid imagination is the only conclusion I can deduce.

My apologies. I did try to edit my comment when I realised my mistake, but I was out of time, and I apologise.

It was me that coined the phrase “refugee-hating”.

I used it in the context of the government blaming refugees for their own policy failures.

Indeed the government when T May was Home Secretary initiated a “hostile Environment” for immigrants thereby furthering the antipathy towards immigrants in general.

This thread has rather gone off topic, it happens, which is one reason I have butted out. That and it is clear that my views and those of Bobby are totally opposed and we are never going to agree on the subject of refugees.

That may well be John, but

    a) People should not allege that refugees are illegal because they want to claim asylum in the only way possible,

    b) people should not exploit a perfectly acceptable thread about Tim, his pubs and employing hospitality workers, to air their special brand of bigotry.

    c) people should not mix issues such as hungry and/or homelessness in UK with refugees, they are entirely separate issues. They have no causal effect nor influence. To conflate them is an attempt to gain a moral superiority. It does not succeed. Quite the opposite, it illustrates the fragility of their argument.

Now annoyingly, the UK government wants to create a more accessible legal route for refugees, one that does not require refugees to risk their lives. Yet

    a) they closed off the accessible legal route with the Carriers Act, It was not only safer, it was probably cheaper, and avoided the refugees reliance on people smugglers.

    b) you can bet your bottom dollar that if they do create a supposedly  more accessible legal route, that it will not be more accessible. In which case the refugees simply won’t use it. and

    c) If the refugees do not use it, I don’t think that the government can (internationally legally) stop refugees from arriving in UK (by any means possible) and claiming asylum. So it’ll be purely a PR exercise, only for the likes of deposed dictators from other countries, and another step towards a more hostile environment.

They have already explored a few options, such as some kind of floating barrier in the channel, etc.

I agree with Bobby. The same old bigoted tropes keep being trotted out about refugees. There’s been loads of previous discussions where they have been proved to be false but it just doesn’t register with some. You’re wasting your breath I’m afraid.
I don’t really understand why people have such a big issue with them to be honest?????

Sorry Ed , but Bobby is not available at the moment .( I’m sure he will be along later)

Obviously the whole of the English speaking population of the commonwealth would just love to live in the motherland ?

Sorry, a bit cynical ,but  it’s rather a strange question, Ed

How many people in the world,do you think would like to relocate to England if they could?

Absolutely everyone and then England would sink under all the weight or under Sharia law or compulsory Muslemed or getting blown up by suicide bombers. Foreigners in their own country etc etc etc. The end.

This post is one of the reasons why, as Pestual, I suggested on UIN in reply to someone that union with UIB was not the best idea as posts on UIB tend to be more grumpy and aggressive.

I don`t use Wetherspoons but they are one of the most progressive and socially responsible large employers in the UK, before, throughout and coming out of the pandemic. 48% of income goes to UK tax, on average £560,000 per pub in 2020, they have very high hygene ratings across the company and an apprentice and graduate employment scheme. See March 2021 Company Report. Tim W seems to me to have an Autistic Spectrum disorder which makes his speech/comms a bit patchy, but he calls what he sees including pre and post Brexit in which hospitality employment rates are struggling but so they are the same in Germany and Italy as you read this.

I am not sure why Hungary would want to leave the EU (later in this thread) it gets a lot and exports a lot. I am sure why the EU seeks to cast out the sins of its less pure members and not see those in the in the eye of its big ones. Eg appoint a new President of Commission without a vote of any kind, see/hear/speak no evil to Volkswagen (and possibly French and other EU car climate-change swindlers) & Wirecard, huge German corporate worldwide corruption scandals that regulators outside the EU have been much more assertive about. Germany now relies on its own coal. Russian gas next,  and will undermine the G7 on climate change this week. OOPs. EU policy = Look sensible, Shhh! Don`t rock the boat.
