As some will know, we are on the EDF Tempo scheme and I view it as somewhat of a challenge.
Our heating and hot water is dealt with by means of the log burner which requires power for the water pumps. This is provided from our Power pack which can be charged by solar, by 12 volt from the car or van, or by mains at cheap rates.
Today I have been experimenting with what they call rocket stoves.
I drilled a couple of one inch holes into an old log at right angles, and set a small fire at the intersection, the top of the log serves as a cooking ring with a metal pan support from an old gas hob. The lower hole serves as an air vent.
Easy and effective but the holes do burn through after a couple of hours or so. The log is still smouldering 8 hours later.
I then set about building a slightly larger version with old hollow building blocks. Tomorrow we shall cook on our two ring version.
When the days are red, EDF will not even earn from our cooking or kettle. Mme B says, “unless it is raining”.
Bit of a project there Bonjour, how’s it going?!
Well actually, I’m having a Gleaner moment.
The drilled logs certainly work and are good to try but the do obviously self destruct.
The block designs are brilliant. Our kettle boiled in very fast order and the potatoes cooked in less than half the time as they do indoors.
We are so impressed that I am working on a bigger outdoor kitchen based on the above photo.
It will have at least two rings plus another extra large to take a very large pot. I have bought the water distiller advertised in the classifieds. There will be a separate fire which will heat a convection oven next to it, which is a very similar design but with the incorporation of a couple of paving slabs to form the base of the oven and the top. In moments by the removal of a couple of blocks this could transform to a very cheap pizza oven. I also want to incorporate the griddle from an old gas barbeque and don’t tell Mme B but maybe a washing up station as well.
We have more wood than you can shake a stick at and as the blocks and slabs are not cemented, everything can be adjusted, changed or the whole lot moved.
Mme B works incredibly hard on a daily basis cooking superb delicious meals and doing most of the clearing up. It allows me to get on with other jobs. We joke that we have different departments. My department includes but is not limited to hoovering, grass cutting, logs, cleaning vehicles, various computer tasks and tip runs etc etc, however I do like to cook and look out for good quality meat and fish whenever we are out. Sometimes I will have a recipe in my mind perhaps for weeks and when I find the cut I want I take over the cooking. Today is such a day.
I foresee Mrs B forsaking all responsibilities for cooking and washing up on red days!
Not only on red days but also on nice days.
