    Bonjour,

We have lived in France for over six years and are generally delighted with the wonderful fresh food available.

However; this year for Christmas we have decided to have  traditional English fare but the one thing we can’t find is a Stilton truckle.

We don’t want a small wedge of Stilton but a proper cylindrical truckle so that we can anoint it with port ! :yahoo:

Does anyone know where we can get a proper half round between 1 and 2 kg in Morbihan (56)

We are not far from Baud but will gladly travel to find a nice truckle.

    Stay safe,

    Alfa.

The only suggestion I can make is to give the English shop in Gouarec a ring 02 96 24 75 26. I don’t think they will have a whole cheese but they may be able to get you one. The big Leclerc in Quimperle has a good cheese counter and they have stilton but only a slice off the big cheese. They also stock a nice mature cheddar.

    Good luck!

If you have a Leclerc hypermarché nearby you could check, they were selling cut off wedges plus they also had some truckles last December at the one in Plerin. It was rather good!

Carrefour hypermarché had wedges cut from the big truckle, that was the store at Langueux.

Years ago , when we had money  we used to buy a half a stilton every christmas from a French cheese merchant . ( had to look up ” truckle” )  If you order early enough , then it is not a problem to get Stilton in France.

Find a good cheese shop .

half a Blue Stilton is 4 kilo , which is about €90

    Try fromagegouda.fr

You have brought back a funny memory.  We had a pub and served food – many years ago.  Used to do the stilton with port.  Was always put in the cold counter.  Always went well with customers.

Put it out one day and it was moving……. lifted it up and – drunk maggots.

    Try this.

Toast some bread, then melt some stilton cheese on it and when it’s still warm drizzle some honey over it (not too much) and cut the toast in to quarters, delicious! Nice with an aperitif.

Everything is nice with an aperitif t, even sausages.

I’ve done that with Brie and Camembert, Tigre, but not Stilton. Will give it a try at some point. :good:

I’m looking forward to enjoying a mature Stilton and fig bake that’s awaiting attention in the fridge, thanks to Lidl.

Many thanks for all your replies.

There is a recently opened cheese shop in Baud, which we visited for the first time this morning.

They didn’t have Stilton but I was drawn to an Auvergne Bleu which looked remarkably like a Stilton.

We’ve had this blue cheese before (from supermarkets) but this one just looked different.

Yellower and with a nice crusty rind.

We bought a small wedge and when we tasted it – success !!!!

If I were tasting it blind I’d swear it was Stilton., unlike the previous supermarket offerings.

We will order a half round (it’s quite a big cheese) and get the port into it.

No more supermarket blue cheese for me !!! :good:

    Quite so,

My wife calls her 5 o’clock aperitif her imperative !!

    (Usually a large J&B Rare)

    Stay safe.

Mark, there is another French blue cheese called Bleu de Basque(I think that is how you spell it) which has much of the taste and texture of Stilton. Like most cheese it improves with age so much nicer when bought from an artisan in a local market.

Carrying on the Stilton theme. Anyone in the UK or in France and being sent a food parcel that like fruity white Stilton, Lidl have white Stilton with soft fruits and brandy and also with apricot, orange and amaretto.

I took your advice Mark and bought a small wedge of Auvergne Bleu this week as we have no friends coming from the UK with stilton, we tried it last night and it really was delicious…. so much so I opened the Christmas port !!!
Thank you so much for your tip.

Good friends arrived from the uk last night bearing  my favorite cheddars..I,m happy…plus crackers…as we,re just two…we can have three each.

    plus two big pork pies….

two homemade Christmas cakes from my sister….we don’t eat them…they always get given away..never had the heart to tell her.

It’s beginning to feel like Christmas.

Lucky you Marmite, the last time we had pork pies was last November when I last  saw my  Dad, I discovered Lidel Uk and went absolutely mad, sausages, bacon, cheddar, halomi, pork pies, scotch eggs etc etc

I miss good old jacobs crackers but have found something similar at Leclerc Lamballe, just put them on my shopping list this morning.

    Enjoy your goodies, Merry Christmas.

I would recommend Stichelton to anyone who likes Stilton. It’s actually what Stilton used to be before it was decreed that it could only be made with pasteurised milk. Cheese made with raw milk and animal rennet has a much greater depth of flavour imo.
