We decided to install an electric shutter on a door…security reasons…
a company came today to give us a quote…apparently nowadays they are moving to solar powered…you don’t get locked in if there’s a power cut…it was almost 1000 euros ..their quote…no electrics required ..it comes ready to slot in..
Ive checked on line…it’s expensive…so I’m going to get more quotes.
Has anyone had one installed ?
I have no experience of solar power. I have just invested in solar panels which should arrive anytime soon. I am questioning my sanity because anything solar powered needs the sun and all I have had for the last six months is rain. I guess you have to ask yourself two things, how much more expensive is a solar shutter than an electric one and how many hours of power cuts do you get compared with the number of hours with no sun? I am sure they have some kind of battery as a back up but you have to wonder how long does the battery last if there is no sun. Just my thoughts, maybe someone here has actual experience they can share.
I have an electric shutter on my back door. If there is a power cut I cannot open it unless I use a generator. It is only really a problem if the power cut is for along period as last November. I guess more expensive shutters may have a manual override, I don’t know. I do remember noticing though that during the last big power cut there were a lot of shutters closed all day in my village.
The door we are covering is not the only access…so with a power cut …not the end of the world.
apparently the solar powered shutters…only need a very short period of sun to charge …per month….backup batterie provided.
Im not tempted …I find it too expensive…(MM seems tempted…nothing to do!)
no holes for electricity….
im hunting on the internet for a made to measure ….MM is hunting for someone to fit it…it will be very heavy..
solaire seems the way to go…
reality is ,having a shutter on the door means the ground floor is more secure….even here in the country there is more theft…trying to make things difficult seems a good idea.
We had solar volets installed on our 3 downstairs windows facing east. One of them was partly covered, but we were told it would work ok. They have been in now for almost a year and worked all through the winter no problem. We had a large one fitted on our rear double sliding doors which are also working well. We had them fitted by a company in Loudeac for cheaper than we could buy them at Brico Depot or Leroy Merlin. Would highly recommend the company. Hope this helps.
The company was Idéal Confort in Loudeac. It is a family run concern and we have found them very helpful, reasonably priced and cheaper than buying from Leroy Merlin or Brico Depot, plus they were installed and guaranteed.

Just back from Castorama…thé solaire shutter is 417euros….they have artisans to fit it…130 euros…we were really happy…until they sprung another 150 euros for the artisans petrol….!
we are going to see if we can find someone local to fit it…there’s no electrics…
Well get there !
I bought an electric shutter from Brico depot a few years back. I fitted it myself which was a bit nerve racking because you have to cut the shutter to the correct width and you only get one shot at it, but I took it slowly and measured everything several times. An artisan should have no problems, it isn’t that difficult especially if you have done them before.

4th April 2024 at 8:59 am #597965Not sure I’d feel comfortable unless I have the option to have a manual over-ride.
4th April 2024 at 9:06 am #597966We once had a manual roller shutter for a front door. It was operated by pulling a tape. The tape snapped and bought the shutter crashing down. It was then impossible to raise except from above and even then with great difficulty.
Ours isn’t the only exit….in that room..even in the kitchen there’s another door…but it is a vulnerable entrance…I want to feel secure…there’s too many stories of break in’s in rural areas…with this shutter in place ..we can shut the ground floor entirely….MM is going to have an operation in the near future…I need to feel secure in the house.
the world is becoming a dangerous place…nothing will make it 100% …but we’re doing what we can to make it difficult.
