Hi,following on from other threads,i thought that a separate thread might be useful on smartphones for those of us that have never had any need or interest in using them but might be forced in to using them in the near future for travel etc.My first question is,i have a good contract with Reglo Mobile which has all the calls and texts that i need included,i also have 100Mo included.I have no idea what this means, but i assume that it is something to do with data.If i put my sim card in a smart phone, would this allow me to send/receive emails, use the internet etc? Thanks for any info,TC.

I,m the last person to give iPhone info….but My iPhone is included in my Orange contract…ie house internet, fixed phone and tv…

it also means I use the phones hotspot to connect my iPad when I,m out and about …which is not often.

we are paying 58 euros a month for the service…

I am also a bit hazy when it comes to technical working of mobiles but what I understand is that your smartphone will connect to your livebox or equivalent via Wifi when you are within range. It only uses your data when it cannot connect to your box or another Wifi source such as a bar or cafe or other place that offers free Wifi. Therefore the amount of data you need depends on how much you connect to the internet when you are out of range of a free Wifi connection. Streaming TV or video is the most data hungry. If you find you are regularly using all your available data allowance you may want to increase it. Barty will explain things better than I can if he sees your post.

    This might help

A smartphone is a mobile phone that includes advanced functionality beyond making phone calls and sending text messages. Most smartphones have the capability to display photos, play videos, check and send e-mail, and surf the Web.

    …,……

As John P says, your smartphone will connect to your home wifi and any free wifi outside to connect you to the internet, no extra charge

If you have a ‘data allowance’ with your SIM package you can turn on ‘data roaming’ or ‘mobile data’ when out and about if you want to send/check emails, get on the internet. Most SIM providers let you fix a data limit and then you get a message if you are near this limit. Over the limit an extra charge kicks in.

I use an Android Samsung phone. I always buy a refurbished model, saves money!

Every time you use the internet you are being tracked. Google has a profile of every user as does Amazon to name just 2.

Yes, you are ready to go with your SIM card. As Moi says: If you buy an Android phone (one from a variety of manufacturers using Google’s Android operating system) go to settings, click on data usage and turn on mobile data. 100 MO (the 4,95€ offer from reglo mobile) is not very much and of little use. I pay 9,95€ per month and get 50 GO from reglomobile. Which is 50 times as much data as the 4,95€ deal and would be enough to serve all your needs. You can change offers with Reglo mobile for the following month before the 28th of the preceding month. You will need to create an espace client to do this easily.

With 50GO you need not worry about connecting to public networks, which I would avoid if you can.

50GO is 500 times as much as 100MO

    6th April 2021 at 11:11 am #548232

Thanks for that,i didn,t think 100MO would be any good, but i wasn,t concerned as i have never used it in the last 4 years.Another question please, also have a Tesco mobile pay as you go which is again brilliant for texts and calls,if i were to put the sim card in to a smartphone would i be able to send /receive emails and access the internet. There is no contract,so would you somehow pay from your credit every time you did something like email or internet?

PAYG still depends on whether or not you have a data allowance as part of the PAYG SIM . Tesco do ROCKET packs with data as well as text/calls. If you check Tesco No-Contract SIM with Rocket Packs on their mobile website. Basically, when you top up you get a monthly allowance of minutes/texts+data- pick what you need size wise , priced accordingly.

Not the same as just PAYG but does expand the use of the SIM for internet.

And for those Facebook junkies, a little more info to help them sleep at night.

I don’t do Facebook but I use Whatsapp. The recent harvesting hook up with Facebook and changes to Ts&Cs was not adopted in Europe or UK.

I still would not trust Facebook.

I am saying this only because this thread is to help those dreading having to move to the next bit of tech, Facebook is not an integral part or essential to smartphones. Many use their smartphones to access social media, to do this they have to download those particular apps.

Exactly. I control my smartphone to do what I need and want to do. No disasters, ignore ads. Save shedloads of money using Whatsapp to keep in touch with people outside UK.

Shedloads of money can be saved by using conventional methods of internet access, like desktops & laptops. And keeping touch with friends and family can be done with an ordinary telephone or “dumb” mobile using your actual voice and/or text messages. It is not yet compulsory to put your life on a “smart” phone (aka Tracker) as much as the industries concerned would like it. Your life is now a commodity, and your data is bought and sold on the open market. They are counting on you not giving a damn.

I used my phone covid app this morning…first time…it was easy.

i did find you don’t open it until you’re ready to leave…If you go as two …do you do a second app.?

    6th April 2021 at 3:10 pm #548259

Hi,what is the Covid App please, what did you mean when you said”don,t open it until you leave”,just trying to gather as much info as possible on all this, thanks,TC.

If you are paranoid about being tracked, simply disable the GPS on the smartphone.

Sometimes it is handy to be tracked, on the Viewranger app this feature is called Buddy Beacon and allows someone permitted by you to find you, or at least your phone, should something go wrong.

My guess is that in the not too distant future, ordinary telephones are going to prove too expensive with the decline in their use, and the wires and whatnot, to justify the service. Best to embrace the new technology now, or at least familiarise yourself with it so you can continue to communicate. Things just aren’t going to stop at Windows XP and the old Nokia.

Smartphones are easier to use than a 20 year old tv remote control. They are simply small portable computers, usually with a decent camera, with nothing sinister about them.

Pish and tish, who needs a GUI? The whole world is being dumbed down, I blame Simonio and Lyndiana Bernacotti for the downfall of civilisation with their new fangled invention.
