There is a bill going through the EU parliament at the moment………..
Dear Madam, dear Sir,
As you probably know, there is growing pressure to force you to undergo medical or fitness examinations if you want to keep your driving license.
Originally, there was talk of imposing it on you from age 75.
Worse, the rapporteur of the text at European level, MP Karima Delli, wants your license to be automatically suspended, and to be revalidated… from the age of 67.
In either case, a measure as humiliating as it is useless, when we know that senior drivers are those who cause the fewest serious accidents!
The Transport Committee of the European Parliament must decide on December 7 , and the resulting text will then be submitted to all MEPs.
Until then, it is absolutely essential to rally as many voices as possible to block it. It is vital ! So, please sign the petition without missing a beat:
I actually think it would be a good idea if older drivers took a test to ensure their ability to drive. I think hearing, vision, and speed of reaction would be good to test. Maybe after the age of 80. Opticians could be organized to perform the tests.
It would appear that the liguedesconducteurs.org have gone off half-cocked on this one – possibly to rake in some contributions?
Minister of Transport Clément Beaune at the Élysée on September 20, 2023. | LUDOVIC MARIN / AFP

“France does not want to make medical examinations compulsory for elderly drivers. While the European Commission has launched a “discussion” around the sustainability of the driving license for seniors, the Minister of Transport Clément Beaune wanted to clarify the position of the French government: “We are not in favor of it ” , a- he declared this Friday October 6, 2023 on Sud Radio.
“There is a European discussion which has been initiated by the European Commission […] which could create this type of obligation” , for example a compulsory medical examination from the age of 70 to be able to continue driving, explained Clément Beaune.
The minister justified his position, explaining that many elderly people “need ” a car, particularly in rural areas . “We do not want to issue a license linked to age ,” he assured, rejecting the notion of an “expired” driving license”
I have been driving (with a valid clean licence) since 1970, I975 for PSV, 1982 for HGV. I drove professionally for 30 years and I have NEVER had a blameworthy accident and never claimed off my insurance in 53 years other than for windscreen or vandal damage. In the last two years, my local bus service has been withdrawn and my local bank has closed. Perhaps one of these morons who wants to take my licence away can show me a better driving record
Younger drivers may have faster reactions but older drivers have experience which you can’t teach, and the common sense to drive according to road conditions. I know my eyesight is not as sharp as it was 20 years ago and drive accordingly, do 20 year olds drive according to their lack of experience??
There are undoubtably some older drivers who for medical reasons should not be driving but to write off everyone over the age of 70 is insane and totally unecesessery
I thought rhat France already has a system for unfit drivers to get around.
Isn’t it called sans permis.
And anyway I thought they were determined to bring in driver free cars.
Absolutely agree with JP but even the best drivers get worse eventually, its the reason we had to have medicals for HGVs every five years.
At my age in France I need a medical every year for PSV and every other year for HGV so I have not re-newed them. It is not worth all the paperwork and hoop jumping for something I will never use but sad nevertheless to let them go after all these years. Personally I don’t think licences will be removed on an age only basis, there will be too much resistance to such a move but I am sure things will get more difficult, not easier, to retain it. When has so called progress ever made life easier.
It’s funny ,and nothing personal to anyone on here , but I have said for years, you can criticise someone’s kids ,lifestyle ,appearance and they won’t like it but will accept it Criticise their driving though and all hell breaks loose
Well…they are not criticizing our driving as individuals…they are blanket covering people by age.
my sister has never been a confident driver…I’ve always been .
Age should not be a deciding factor..
reality is that if you are stopped by the police for bad driving and they are concerned by your age and condition they can instigate an examination…quite rightly.
Hermitage, Insurance companies put prices up and dispute claims and trim them down as much as they can. They are not known for giving discounts. Nowadays the price rises each year overtake the extra no claims discount we may get.
Giving discount would impact their earnings. Not going to happen I’m afraid.
