Allegedly so.
I had an an idea about that but need a technical or Gleaner type person to consider it.
Many of us have those self rotating fans on top of our wood burners or stoves to spread the warm air around the room. I think the rising warm air spins the blades.
If I mount say a 5 litre frozen water bottle above it, would it work in reverse as air conditioning?
I know I would need a drip tray.
Any comments welcome?
18th June 2024 at 9:26 am #600581Our fan which sits on top of the wood burner has some ‘connector thingies’ on the bottom which are in direct contact with the top of the wood burner and which make the fan turn when the wood burner gets to a certain temperature. Unless you have the heat from the wood burner the blades don’t turn so I’m not sure how you would make your idea work.
Yes the warm air rises from the bottom which make it turn, but why can’t the heavier falling cold air from above make it turn?
Gleaner or Fitter WCB, Motorcycliste etc will know.

18th June 2024 at 10:10 am #600592sandwiched between the fan and the base is something called a “Peltier” plate, this is 2 different materials and when there is a temperature difference between them it generates electricity, which then drives the fan motor.
they can be run in reverse where you put electricity in and one side gets hot and the other cold, this is how a lot of battery operated drinks coolers or mini fridges work, they blow a fan over the hot side to stop it getting too hot, this causes the cold side to get even colder
I have repaired several of the fire fans for people, as if the plate gets too hot it breaks, which is why generally there are a couple of brass/copper strips on the bottom that bend and lift the fan up if it is getting too hot
peltier service / repair kits are on amazon etc. I think I paid around 12 euro, I see they also sell complete ready built 12v Cooling modules for around 20 – 30 euro

19th June 2024 at 5:50 pm #600632We use one of those fans that sits on the log burner, and starts turning when the fire heats up. Seem pretty effective.
20th June 2024 at 10:19 am #600651regarding Ice to cool a room, we have several electric fans to which I clip ice packs on the front to cool the air, it works well to cool the bedroom on an evening
I see the forecast is for much improved weather / temperatures after the weekend

Is that it then, summer over? After enjoying some decent weather for about 3 weeks in June, July so far has been crap with rain and morning temperatures struggling to reach double figures. My local forecast for the next ten days is rain and overcast with morning temperatures in low teens. This is Autumn weather. Global warming………………………..really
