Has anyone got experience with Sky DSL Satelite Internet?
I have heard that it is not 100% reliable and is affected largely by the weather. We may be moving to an area that only has 1.9 download speed and wonder if we should take a chance on this compaNy.
Thank you all in advance
My friends live in an isolated place near Bergerac and have Sky DSL. They say that generally it works well though they do have or at least, did have problems with the connection in bad weather, which is probably normal with a dish and they did have some problems with the admin side of things for a while. Apparently the admin is done from Germany and they only accept French bank details for the billing etc. My friends tried to pay from an account in the UK and had problems. The say the customer service in Germany is very good.
They are satisfied with the overall service provided.Blimey, deja vu……. here what I just wrote elsewhere:
Firstly if you are really getting a consistant 1.9mbs on the phone line then I’d stick with that. For general usage most people won’t notice much difference between 2mbs and 10mbs. 2mbs is plenty for most streaming, so the difference only really becomes apparent when you download stuff. In general 2mbs on a cabled connection will feel faster than a satellite connection because there is a delay on a satellite system of 750ms (ish) between pressing the send button and getting anything back (latency or ping time) compared to less than 50ms on a cabled connection.
I sell satellite broadband and I always discourage people from using it if they can get a connection on the phone line unless they have a very good reason.
Sky DSL sell the TooWay system but manage their users in a completely different way to every other TooWay seller. TooWay it’s self is a pretty robust connection.
Anonymous6th September 2016 at 11:20 am #34626Sky DSL is unlimited and for sat internet quite a good deal, Nordnet which we have is limited to 20GO a month, unlimited after eleven PM, its not cheap, speed can be a little up and down. I think you might find that the state is still offering cash back with the sat system, Barty should know how it works. We didn’t buy the gear we rent it for 10€ a month. Fibre is being rolled out everywhere at the moment, so its live in hope that one day it will get rolled out straight past our house.
There’s pros and cons broadly on Tooway there’s groups of 50 users on each 22mbs data stream, all resellers other than SkyDSL limit usage so that everyone gets a fair crack of the whip, in broad terms SkyDSL let the usage manage it’s self (my understanding is that it’s not quite as simple as that).
In my view it’s pretty academic anyway, if I had 1.9mbs on a land based system I’d use that
6th September 2016 at 8:13 pm #34768Many thanks for your input, Pete, BartyB, Bodiddly and Vegemite Kid. Seems like it would be best to see how we go with the 1.9 and if it isn’t enough, add on more. We have a MAC Mini connected to one TV and watch ‘catch-up’ and Netflix etc. through that. Of course, a wet Friday or Saturday night is the real test, isn’t it!
Anonymous6th September 2016 at 10:24 pm #34796Few days maybe then wait til next month and your next 20GO. Barty, apparently you can get a Linux sat box, record up to eight channel’s at the same time and pay some chap three quid a month to hack all the sky channel’s, no idea how long that will last though.
To record 8 channels simultaneously and reliably you’d need 8 satellite feeds, quite apart from anything else I find the idea of needing to record 8 channels improbable. Twin tuner boxes are readily available.
Card sharing has been around for ever, it’s clearly illegal for the service provider and Sky are pretty active at shutting the servers down.
Anonymous7th September 2016 at 12:00 am #34820Not card sharing, no cards involved. Records up to eight channel’s via vtwo inputs but channels all have to be on same transponder. Apparently a chap hacks the sky recognition codes and the box up date’s itself via a pre programmed USB key then downloads the sky EPG.
