Have you seen the curious story of the Russian boat packed with 20,000 tons of nitrate which has now broken down off the coast of Kent? If it exploded, it would be the size of 2 Hiroshima bombs. The route it took from northern Russia has been curious, passing Norwegian, Danish, and UK energy and military infrastructures. Now it’s not that far off Dungeness nuclear power station. Strange, as it was supposed to be going to the Canary Islands.
It’s not so much Dungeness nuclear power station to be worried about, it’s the sunken wreck of the Richard Montgomery just off of the Isle of Sheppey.
“She was wrecked on the Nore sandbank in the Thames Estuary, near Sheerness, Kent, England, in August 1944, while carrying a cargo of munitions. About 1,400 tonnes (1,500 short tons) of explosives remain on board presenting a hazard whose likelihood of explosion is variously asserted to be low to moderate”

For some years now there has been an exclusion zone round the Montgomery but we used to catch Bass and Lobsters there, sometimes fishing from the masts.
I read a report that detailed that the masts are to be removed as they are in a dangerous state, and if they were to fall, could set an explosion off.
I heard that too. It is amazing that they have withstood the harshest of conditions between wind and tide for so long.
There are a lot more bombs and the like there now than there were originally. For years trawlers have hauled up all sorts of live munitions from the Estuary, rather than have the hassle of reporting them and probably having your gear blown up then waiting for compo to get new gear, a good number of boats dumped these explosives alongside the wreck, where they wouldn’t be trawled up again.
More from gCaptain including some sort of sonar image of the wreck underwater.
Doesn’t look good
