Brexit is finished Marmite, this is just the way that it has always been before the EU , which is a lot longer than after.
The EU has been a stabilising force for many years , but I am starting to feel that it is going to break up .
Anonymous29th October 2021 at 9:31 am #562200Most people don’t understand why the EU is a good thing for Europe . Many of course, have never lived in a Europe without it .
As has been noted many times , the bureaucracy is the worst part of the system , and that is why folk are turning against it.

What I find odd about this trawler being seized is that nobody seems interested in whether or not it actually has a licence. I would have thought there was a world of difference between a trawler being picked up for fishing illegally, and a trawler being picked up for no reason. After all if the UK is going to claim France shouldn’t have taken action because it doesn’t matter if a boat has a licence or not, what is all the fuss about, the French boats can go fish where they like.
Deboer Brexit is finished.
Interviewed this morning George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs describes himself as being “quite happy” about Brexit being twice as bad for the U.K. economy as the pandemic.
I understand plenty of negotiations are still happening between EU and the UK government who apparently still have no idea what they signed or what they want.
How lucky the UK is to have Lord Frost, an unelected bureaucrat, showing how to negotiate and then change his mind.
Anonymous29th October 2021 at 10:26 am #562206It suits Johnson and his pro Brexit cronies to portray the UK as victims of the EU – most of the media in the UK have been lying about Europe for the last 40 years.
There is an interesting blog here https://chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2021/10/wanted-serious-post-brexit-policy.html – it may not be suitable for Brexiters as it contains long words, but the link to the Polish journalist and lorry driver Tomas Orynski’s article is as good an explanation as to why eastern European lorry drivers won’t be flocking back to the UK for temporary visa’s.
Not a lot this week about the trawler dispute, but if you go back a bit there are excellent explanations of the ins and outs of the dispute with the UK and Jersey over fishing licences.
I think there is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black here.
As we know France are very strict when it comes to bureaucracy, the slightest issue and they throw it out. Many of us have experienced this in registering vehicles and suchlike.
My understanding is that there were less than 50 applications for licences to fish in Jersey’s waters.
Twelve were approved and another twelve are pending. Others are ineligible.
The French fisherman have always been militant and Macron scores brownie points for standing up to UK, there is an election coming up next year after all.
It does not help things when his ministers describe the tensions as conflict. This can lead to things getting out of hand.
Boris and co score their own brownie points and deflect news from other issues by standing up to Macron. It is a merry go round.
As for the arrest of the ship I do not know the details but if it were fishing illegally it must face the consequences, if not compensation may well be in order.
29th October 2021 at 11:21 am #562216This thread is about the dispute over fishing rights and the seizure of a UK registered fishing vessel and her crew.
It is not about Brexit and it is not going to become personal.
Thank you.
The fishing dispute is very much about Brexshit. note the Scottish government did not support the actions of the Sottish fishermen and now that bastion of the stupid right wing The Daily Express has breaking news “Brexit LIVE: Navy ‘on standby’ as Boris to crush French fishing threat–Macron left reeling”
NOTE THEY USE THE PHRASE BREXIT so it must be about Brexshit.
I assume Macron has been caught fishing in “English” waters with a rod and line which have left him reeling, I wonder what he was reeling in, probable the dumbbell that is called Bimbo.
Hang on a sec,the very first line of the opening post on this thread clearly and correctly states that this dispute with the fishing boats IS directly down to Brexit, the UK Gov are being brought to account for once again not keeping to an agreement that they wanted and happily signed.
29th October 2021 at 4:48 pm #562256Unfortunately although a good number of political pundits, mostly from the Express/Mail neck of the woods are putting this down to electoral sparring between Macron and Le Pen, the main fact of the matter is that the core of the problem is indeed Brexit related.
The great majority of the fish eaten in the UK is imported from the Scandinavian regions, frozen at source and converted into ready meals. Unlike the Europeans, people in the UK don’t actually eat a lot of fresh fish.
However, whatever their preferences, two tonnes of scallops trawled within French waters will find a ready market in the UK simply because it is one of the highest value catches and will be bought by the upper end of the market. The fact that this boat is owned by a shellfish company speaks volumes and the fact that they were fined heavily in 2017 for doing exactly the same thing just adds to the argument.
The French trawlermen have waited all summer to make this catch and are now at the height of the season. Whether it’s for political gain or not is beside the point. The fact remains that by taking the Johnson approach to see if they could get away with it, they took the risk.
They got caught doing something that they shouldn’t have done and now they are being taught a lesson. This happens – it’s life. The UK fishing industry didn’t like the French using their waters and so they voted to stop it.
The French are only showing that it works both ways.
Regarding Scallops, they are at their best and most valuable later, in the depths of winter when they have the big orange roes. France usually and sensibly restricts the Scalloping for the French boats early in the season but the UK boats fish on without competition from local boats. This is what caused the ugly scenes in the Channel a year or so ago when boats were rammed. Surely is the French cannot fish their own scallops, no one should?
It is common sense to harvest the Scallops when they are at their best, and their most valuable. It means the fishermen earn more money for less work, there is less fuel used and the seabed is impacted less. It also preserves the stock for the future.
29th October 2021 at 5:15 pm #562261Of course it does, just like the freedom of movement. My above reply was to John James. Totally agree.
29th October 2021 at 5:16 pm #562262I do not think the French will be too worried about the UK Navy being on stand by as quoted by the Express. There is not too much of the Navy left now. Around 70 ships at the present time.
The thread does include Brexit. Anything to do with fishing does include Brexit. You cannot avoid it unfortunately.
