One privilege of living in France is to enjoy a lovely drop of wine and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

I love a drop of red with a piece of cheese, preferably an 18 month comte with a nice red Bordeaux.

I have tried many wines since I arrived in France and never spent a lot of money to do so. What are your favourite budget French wines?

    Here are my choices:

    L’enclos DES TUILERIERS     Bordeaux                   Lidl

LES ORMES de CAMBRAS    Merlot                         L eclerc/Intermache

    ROCHE MAZET Pays D’Oc     Chardonnay              L eclerc/Intermache

These wines are normally between 2.0-3.0€ per bottle and can often be found on special by the case.

    What are your favourites?

For health reasons we no longer drink alcohol but when we did it was always some sort of Bordeaux, usually mid-price range, or just one up from the really cheap stuff, depending on the budget, from whatever shop we were in at the time!

A mate of mine who dabbled in the wine business said that ‘you don’t often find a bad Corbieres’, something I’ve found to be true.

I have found some nice Gaillac nearby but would probably plump for a nice Burgundy if pressed…( me and the wine !)

Over the years I havent found a Bordeaux I can honestly say I have liked (OK take away St Emilion) if I dig deeper in the wallet I have found a few but….I am more of a Burgundy person, not neccessarily the top plonk but having just returned from Spain, we have again brought back a supply of Rioja’s ranging from just €2,99 up to a price where we will open it quitely and glug it down ourselves. We also bring back Cava ready for the summer but France do have some nice sparkling wines as good as “lower costing” (for lack of a better word) Champagne, Clairette de Die and Cremant de Limoux being just two.

Mme Merlot and I seem to have a mutual understanding.
I like her and she makes me happy.

I am a fan of ‘Paul Mas’ BIO wines. Most non-Bio wines give me a terrible headache.

I’m with John P about the cheese. The older the better!

OK, i’m a heathen but I can’t get into Bodeaux wines – even the pricey chateaux bottled stuff. I find it heavy, a bit like most Bergerac wines i’ve tried.

Not a Bordeaux fan either. I like Minervois and other Languedoc-Roussillon wines, find them more fruity and flavoursome.

I just remembered I used to like the Saumur wines when we lived in that area.

I used to get nervous about choosing rosé wines for others (guests etc) I never quite knew what was good in rosé wines as we didn’t really drink them.
