Good morning all. Just received my second email from EDF recommending Tempo and the possibility of saving up to 500€ per year. Have read all the positive posts on here. Does anyone have anything negative to say? Thank you.

We have nothing negative to say about it.

We are paying far less than before we changed over to Tempo. Although we have not yet had a red day since we switched our current daily cost is 1.04 Euros. We use wood to heat the house and hot water. Even on a red day EDF will not get rich on us.

Thanks again to John James who provided the inspiration and answered questions for us to make the decision.

We’ve been on Tempo for a year now and we’re staying on it. The important thing is to plan in advance how you are going to deal with Red days so they are not difficult to cope with when you really need to minimise your electricity use.

Can I ask how big is your house Bonjour and what electric appliances do you have?

Im not sure what our tariff is called…it was arranged by mm…over the phone…we get two time slots a day…12pm..15_30pm

    2 am til 7 am.

The night time one is ok for water heating …but honestly nothing else.

we paid out for special clocks for the water heaters…in all honesty it will probably take months to amortize that.

i now do washing …and other things after lunch…We’ll see!

House is a neo Breton 3 bedroom with full sous sol.

Washing machine only run at night via timer.

Upright fridge Freezer and one chest Freezer, until last week we had 2 running.

Electric oven -used a lot, convection hob, microwave dinger.

Lights are now mostly led thanks to Gleaners hand made barrel lights.

    Occasional other appliances.

We always disconnect the Sky and TV as well as the phone chargers when not in use.

We watch very little TV unless Rugby is on.

Windows are double glazed and there is a bit of insulation in the loft.

Often, even in winter windows are open, the wood burner is too good sometimes.

Good morning, we received an e mail from EDF re Tempo, my only concern is how many red days in a row do you get ?  Any advice on how you are careful on these days, obviously I wouldn’t use the washing machine, but we still need hot water and we like our dishwasher.

    Thank you

    19th November 2023 at 9:53 am #593352

You can get up to 5 red days in a row ….. they are never at the weekend or on a Jour Ferié. Plus, It’s only on the heures plein that the price is very high, even on a red day the heures creuses price is cheaper than on a normal tarif.

Our ballon is set on a timer to only heat up the water overnight, I always do my washing overnight anyway so I assume you could do the same with a dishwasher. I don’t use my electric oven but I have a gas hob so I also have a hob top kettle instead of the usual electric one. Plus, be mindful to unplug anything you don’t actually need, especially things that are normally left on standby.

Oh …. forgot …. I don’t get the vacuum out on a red day either!!!!! :yahoo:

Unless he is rechargeable in which case don’t plug him in.

    19th November 2023 at 10:08 am #593355

I haven’t made it as far a a cordless yet, Bonjour!

We have a Dyson which we used on our boat but now the camping car. It is remarkably powerful but goes from full power to dead instantly.

We changed to Tempo recently so don’t have any reliable electricity costs to compare with pre-Tempo.

House is a 1927 stone house that had been extended, reasonably well insulated.

Our planning for red days includes:-

Lights are all LED except bedside lights which are 40 watt filament bulbs.

Range cooker has gas hob, one gas oven, one electric oven, gas grill.

So boil kettle on gas hob, cook with gas oven if oven  needed.

Microwave may get used as it’s only on for 3-5 minutes at a time so minimal cost even on a red day. – about 100 watt/hr = about 7.5 €cents

Washing machine, dishwasher and water heating are on the EDF automatic heures creuse circuit which only comes on after 10.30 pm.

Heating is a combination of  2 x  500 watt electric towel rails + 2 x   1.5 kw electric radiators (one is on a plug-in time switch- one would be switched off) + 2 x petrole heaters + 2x wood stoves. Usage of each depends on how cold the weather is at the time.

If necessary could use the generator.

In a way its fun, it makes you think too.

Bonjour – how do you dry your clothes because the last 6 weeks have been dreadful with the rain?  Are you on mains gas?  What do you do in the evening if you don’t watch tv?  You obviously don’t buy food in bulk, because you only have a fridge freezer and a chest freezer.  You seem to have it sussed anyway but at my age I don’t want to have to watch every centime.  I’ve done that all my life.

Have to agree Kate…but if needs must I can be as careful as anyone.

If the dishwasher is full and we’ve missed the after lunch slot…sorry it goes on..can’t wait up until 2 pm.

this house has amazing insulation…the bulbs everywhere are the economy bulbs…at least nowadays they don’t take 5 mins to warm up.I can remember going to the loo…it was light as you were crawling back into bed.

I’m a great shopper…all my life I’ve been a careful shopper..I know the prices…I never decide what we are eating in advance….I see what’s in the shops….what’s good.

Ive always been careful…I’ll continue to be careful…it’s my nature.

But you don’t know which electricity tariff you are on?

Kate Bush, regarding the drying I will at the risk of being labelled an ist will be honest. It is dealt with by another department.

Mme B is a huge fan of the revolving washing line and takes every opportunity to use it, sometimes just for a short period before the rain comes in but there have been times when washing is hanging there for days either because it has frozen or is constantly being rinsed by the rain.

The log burner does the radiators and Mme has a hanging rack in front of one or if necessary close to the log burner. It is no problem at all.

Food wise, I do buy meat and fish in bulk, often from the farmer or fishers but also when the prices are good. Vegetables are easily available and we have them fresh from the farmers co operative. We also keep raw milk in the freezer also from the farmer.

The house is gas free but we do have the option of the oil fired boiler should we need to boost things but he really is a low mileage example.

Evenings I like to read but am also teaching myself netmaking, I want to make lobster and crab pots from scratch by April. We tend to retire earlyish and get up early to be able to make the most of the daylight, especially in winter.

Like Mme B, I’m a big fan of the good old fashioned washing line and I have an airer at the top of the stairs so the rising warm air will dry things too. I do use my tumble dryer occasionally but always after 10pm when the price of electricity is cheaper.

But you don’t know which electricity tariff you are on?

I might not know it’s name but I know the hours….we didn’t have a choice of hours ,they gave it us ..our special tariff.

    anonymous!

The hours are ok..especially the 12pm to 3.30pm..time to run the washing machine..that’s not a daily thing ,we’re only two.

Drying clothes…whenever possible outside…when impossible like others ,inside…and 10 mins in the tumble dryer to air .there’s no magic…if you’re drying inside the water goes somewhere….

Being retired means you have time to be economically minded..I don’t want to throw money away on anything we can avoid…plus if a little effort is good for the planet…great!
