    A week or so ago I lost all sound on my computer, which among other things is my radio. The night before the last thing I did was listen to music on YouTube, yet now I couldn’t listen to the Today programme on Radio 4. I tried a CD, but there was still no sound. All was not lost because I still had my smartphone. After trying various things I finally decided to use the Restore function and this solved the problem.

    Yesterday morning I had a far worse problem. Although I could open Google Chrome I couldn’t use it. No BBC, no UiB, nothing. The address of websites would appear but after a few seconds it would disappear. Far worse was that I couldn’t open any documents or programs. I spent hours going through various procedures trying to overcome the problem. I tried Restore, but it failed to work. I defragged, ran disc clean-up, ran anti-virus, restored again without success. The Restore failure message suggested that the system might have been corrupted. Each of these procedures took many attempts before they ran. It was as if clicking on things using the mouse had no effect, but clicking on them using the touch pad was equally ineffective.

    Desperation set in, and I thought I needed to take the computer to an expert. The problem first arose when I tried to used Google Chrome, so I tried Microsoft Edge, but that wouldn’t open. However the Avast browser did work. I decided to uninstall Chrome and reinstall it. Not only did it now work, but I was now able to open other programs and documents. I assume that somehow Chrome had become corrupted, and this then corrupted the entire system.

    Has anyone else had similar problems?

    Not with Chrome but I often uninstall then re install programmes like Skype and Firefox.

    Pete, did either of those programs affect the operation of your computer generally, or did they just malfunction themselves.

    Addressing the problems posted by Abi K….Can you advise what type of computer this is? Which operating system (Windows?). What type of internet connectivity (broadband) you use?

    Where are you? Can you bring the machine to us in 22330?

    Thanks for your reply, Dave. Packard Bell Easy Note TE using Windows 10. Internet by copper wire with download speed of 0.84 this morning, The highest speed in recent months was 2.04 on 19 December last year. Pathetic, isn’t it. I’ve read that anything less than 25 is regarded as poor, but I would be happy at the moment to get into double figures on the other side of the decimal point.

    Broadband – what is that? Rhetorical question, but where I live the internet is still coal-fired!

    Can’t bring it in. You are over 140 km from me.

    With such a poor download speed I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Windows update that was interrupted part way through that bricked your laptop.  :unsure:

    I disabled Windows updates some time ago because of problems they caused with an old version of Outlook, which I use regularly for emails and diary.

    Hi Abi K,

    I feel for you. Yes you’re too far from me & your connection rules out my second option of remote logging into your machine.

    Do the problems persist or is the machine usable now? Can you connect using 4G via a mobile phone?

    Dave, since I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome it has worked fine, thanks.

    I haven’t a clue as to how to connect using my smartphone, but at the moment that isn’t necessary. Just in case the problem returns, perhaps you can tell me how.

    Abi K – If you have an Android phone, go into the settings app (grey with a cogged wheel surrounding a smaller circle)

    Select more from the menu

    then Tethering and portable hotspot

    then set-up WLAN hotspot

    And follow the instructions. You will be given a couple of options for security and you should pursue the one that gives you the option to set a password for the wireless net work you will be creating around your phone. I think it’s the option unhelpfully labelled WPA2 PSK. If not try them both. Without this, anyone in range will be able to benefit from your network. Not a good idea.

    Once set up you can turn it on or off following the same route in settings

    If you have an Iphone from Apple then I am unfamiliar with the details, but the option to create a hotspot will be in settings somewhere.

    Abi K, sounds good….

    Seems Seabadger gave you most of the method to make a local wifi hotspot using your phone….Except on my Android phone you select Mobile Network from the main Settings window, then Tethering & portable hotspot..

    Most Android phones will differ slightly from one manufacturer to another.

    To set up a personal hotspot on an iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), go to Settings > Personal Hotspot > Allow Others to Join and toggle it to on (if you don’t see Personal Hotspot in Settings, tap Cellular > Personal Hotspot). Make note of the Wi-Fi password.

    Turn the hotspot on/off as you need it for both types of phone as it uses battery power…maybe best to connect your charger whilst using the hotspot.

    NOTE – this will only work if you have a good 3G or 4G mobile signal.

    Mine is the latter. I have now done all that is necessary. Hopefully it will work!
