I was told some time ago that the shop was closing down again.
We visited today, the car park was the fullest we have ever seen it (Intermarche was almost empty) and there were loads of empty shelves and empty freezers and fridges. the meat fridge was gone. There were lots of 30% off tickets on lots of products including food, booze and cleaning materials. I asked if the store was closing and was told “non”.
Does anyone know what is going on please?
I saw this on the Connexion site dated the 01.10.24
A total of 21 supermarkets under the brand Casino are set to close in France after failing to find a buyer, with almost 1,000 people expected to lose their jobs.
The 21 sites to close are part of the group of 25 shops in total that had not yet found a buyer, after the restructuring of the Saint-Etienne-based group, due to its serious financial difficulty.
This is such a shame.

We visited today. It is very sad. The store is now around 80% empty. Items remaining are up to 70% off.
I asked the chap at the checkout and he said it will be gone on 30th. I asked him if he had a new job to go to. Non, I thanked him for his work and for the help he always gave to Mme B and I and I wished him good luck. I meant it genuinely but he almost burst into tears.
I am wrong. It is very, very sad. I wish I could offer him a job.
19th November 2024 at 8:42 pm #605028Carhaix Casino closes the same day.
As I understand it the Mayor has already bought the Carhaix building and its car park to keep a major food store in the town centre or demolish it and build things to improve the town, ie homes or offices.
I was part of a project to take over a redundant supermarket it England. It was originally divided up into areas which were then let to independent people and small business along the lines of a market.
There was a card seller, antiques, make up, crafts, china, pictures as well as a tea shop, wool stall, a fishing shop and so many other things. The one in question was still thriving when I was last in England having been started 40 years ago.
Something along those lines might be good for Carhaix if the supermarket is gone.
It provides income for the traders, who enjoy affordable rent for the size of area they need and the diversity of goods provides footfall to keep the town alive.
20th November 2024 at 11:03 am #605038Obviously we were lucky up here in Luneray.
Our Casino was a very sad site back in the summer and eventually closed in August. However, Intermarche have taken it over with, from what I can see, most of the previous staff who altogether seem a lot happier with the situation.
Luneray is only a mid sized country town but we have an Auchon, Intermarche and a large Lidl together with a Cocci centre ville so we are well provided for.
Mark you, we are only an hour and a half from Paris which might have a bearing on it.
