Soooo…
Having bought a car over, we had it CT’d on the English plates so that we could then get French registration. The CT and little CT card that goes in the windscreen is therefore shows the UK reg.
Initially we received WW plates so that we could drive it around and not worry about the UK MOT as it was then on French plates with a CT.
DREAL have just given us the final registration (We couldn’t get a CoC for it so DREAL were involved).
My question (finally) is what do we do about the CT as it still shows the UK reg?
Answers on a postcard please.
No need to do anything other than keep all your paperwork in the car which we all do anyway. Can i just ask please, what was the vehicle and roughly how much did you get skinned for import tax/TVA,i am still considering buying a car and bringing it over, but thanks to the Brexit voters it seems to be a lot more problematic and expensive, thanks.

3rd April 2024 at 1:34 pm #597936Good question TC! I am trying to import a car originally registered in Jersey and it has turned into a complete nightmare of interminable delays. It is impossible to accurately forecast the import charges..apparently it all depends on the vehicles age and emissions. Still waiting for the C.O.C… from BMW, then a CT, followed by a trip to (possibly) Angers (Doaunes, DREAL?)..I don’t know any more! All I do know is that it has taken 2 months so far and the car is still not street legal, even for France. I have spoken to others who have got through this and it can take up to 6 months! The procedure is in the hands of an experienced guy who does this all the time. But even he cannot shorten the timescale! TBH I regret it now, but I needed an auto, RHD, and it fitted the bill.
We,ve always brought our cars from the Uk…the last one two years ago is certainly the last…customs charges plus the charge for the first registration of a non ev…came to over 6000 euros…almost a third again of the cost of the car.
plus all the aggravation of doing it.
If you have a reason for wanting a RHD car fair enough but I can’t see it is worth all the hassle of registering a UK car here. It is inconvenient for overtaking, car park barriers and toll booths and junctions besides which you end up with a car that is pretty worthless here unless you manage to sell it to someone going back to the UK.
I am not talking nearly new cars but I have managed to buy a number of cars here in France for reasonable money that have served me well. I bought a 2008 Citroen C2 18 months ago for 1900€, good condition, one owner, full service history 137K. cheap to run, ideal little runabout. I bought a 2010 Citroen C5 X7 tourer 4 years ago for 3500€. Needed a little tidying, mostly car park knocks. one owner, full service history, 217K, beautiful car, no problems, love it. I ran a Citroen ZX break for 10 years before that which never let me down, I only paid 1000€ for it and resold for 400€ with 466K on the clock. That is cheap motoring by anyone’s standards. If you shop around and stay away from main dealers there are cheap cars out there. Don’t be afraid of high kilometres as long as they have a good service history.
I used to buy cars at auction back in England.
Not being technical I only bought vehicles with a test or warranty. I had a couple of strategies to defeat the army of dealers.
When the vehicle I wanted was about to be driven through I would stand as close to the auctioneer as possible, 3 or feet in front of him, then when the guys with their glasses guides started bidding I would shout as loud as I could and wave my arm in the air £500 or so quid more than the current bid. This silenced the room and if on the very rare occasion a dealer bid against me I would go another very loud few hundred more.
Previously I had lost out a few times as the auctioneer failed to notice my bids (backhanditus I suspect) and although I might have been able to get the odd van cheaper I always got them well below market price and I never had a wrong’un just one that had been a hire van but not registered as such.
Has anyone bought at auction here?
Porsche Boxter
No import duty as it came over as part of a house move.
Registration was 482 euros (similar cars on leboncoin are advertised for 20k euros)
Cost of specialist would have been 80 euros but I had already sorted the import duty document so our bill was 50 euros.
Once it went into the ANTS system it was 2 months
I pulled out a lot of hair and swore a lot.
I also hunted down leads and recommendations of people who could help. All the leads came from selling stuff on FB market place (I kid you not)
All legal and above board as well.
Now I just need to get my UK van done and I’ll be happy as a pig in poo.
Im happy for you…but still bitter about what it cost us!
maybe share your journey…as a fellow market place user!
im still being ripped off….ordered some shoes on Facebook…just found out they are on the way from China….?
glad I paid with PayPal…at least I’ll get my money back.
13th April 2024 at 3:51 pm #598226Just has the douanes costs for the import. 384 euros., inc. TVA. Result! Just goes to show there are people out there who do know what they are doing. Personally I would not have had any idea where to start.
next car …when needed…will possibly come from Germany…cheaper than France…
Are they really that much cheaper when you add up the cost to go and get it, fuel to drive it back, tolls etc?
Haven’t really looked into it ….but we even have French friends who import from Germany and Belgium..
we don’t need a car at the moment….and may even lease in the distant future…depending what happens with cars!
my vw is non negotiable …im thinking of being buried in it!
I hate a dirty car but during the winter months although I wash them regularly they never really look that nice. I don’t like black cars but when you are buying on the second-hand market, condition and service history is more important to me than colour. Every spring and autumn I like to wash, dry and polish my cars. I have just finished my little Citroen C2 and I think it looks pretty good for a 16 year old runabout and it took me just over an hour and a quarter. I use Auto Glym super resin polish, it goes on easily and polishes up quickly without a lot of effort. It is not the cheapest product on the market but it will last now until I put another protective coat on in the autumn.

Our neighbours are Dutch, they get their cars from Germany and re register them here.
Another neighbour imported from Belgium.
Thought about doing this but unsure what sites to look at. Would be fun driving back though.
