Have you had to make any adjustments to how you grocery shop as prices increase?

I have always been a canny shopper but even more now, I always compare prices and make sure I look to see price per kg rather than the price per item, I buy smaller apples and oranges where possible, getting more to the bag.

I haven’t changed what I buy really (apart from for dietary reasons) just more alert.

    Deffo, Fruity, deffo.
But explaining chocolate rationing to her fell on deaf ears.

I will admit that I am no cook – wish that I were – Mrs J maintains that by the time she’s taught me, she may as well have done the job herself. However, I am sous chef in chief and as such am in charge of preparation in the kitchen and pouring the occasional glass of wine to keep the job moving along.

With this in mind, it’s generally my job to go to Lidl to buy the fruit and veg. I’ve always liked Lidl for fresh fruit and veg – I think that maybe they have a quicker sales rate so stuff stays fresher for longer. It’s difficult to analyse prices but I think that this part of the shop has increased a bit and that the card takes a bit more of a hit – but not enough to cut back too much as fresh fruit and veg are so important in the diet. Mrs J cooks everything from scratch and rarely freezes so the secret is keeping it fresh in the house and not waste. Mushrooms can be a nightmare.

More in my domain- I now limit the car to 50 euros worth each time unless there’s a long run to do. There’s not a lot of point in permanently having half a tank in the car – it’s just money not being used.

I’ve just read that electricity prices are going up by 8% but luckily not ’till next year. Bearing in mind what folk are going through in the UK in this respect, we may be getting away relatively lightly.

    Vive la France!

Tesco Clubcard saves quite a bit. Rarely buy meat. Get points from Tesco on food and diesel. Pay using M& S credit card so cashback there as well. Have always checked price per kilo.

Checking price per kilo, buying short dates, seasonal products,  often cook in big quantity and freeze in portion or have the same for 2 or three days. Very few is not cooked from scratch. If not enought to bother putting it in the freezer, it’s recycled into a quiche for exemple.

Also, my priority is quality, not quantity.

One of the things I find surprising is that smaller sized packaging are often cheaper per kilo than the larger ones – sugar is an example. In Britain I would never buy grated cheese – here it is cheaper than the blocks – can only presume it’s because they grate the off cuts from packaging the blocks.

Yes, that price vs sizing issue is common.  I keep thinking the French really have little grip on the concept of retail sales.

The ‘viande pour animaux’ were always good buys if you eat beef, I always used to sort through them to find the ones with less fat content.

Yes the grated cheese is a good buy.

Now I have groceries delivered (no car) I shop Ocado, it takes me ages as I study each item for value ( & for sugar content)

One of the benefits of having groceries delivered is that you aren’t as tempted to put extras into the trolley, things that aren’t on your list! We are on a tight budget so can’t afford to be tempted!

We do most of our shopping using Super U click & collect, but I prefer to choose my own meat, fruit & veg, so do go into Lidl every week – like John J says, their fruit & veg seems to be fresher & lasts longer.

So far, we haven’t changed very much the way we shop or what we buy – like many, we buy what’s in season & what’s on offer, splitting & freezing any larger quantity packs if its cheaper. Again, I cook from scratch so make sure I always have a good selection of herbs, spices, & basics such as onions, garlic, ginger, pulses, tinned & puréed tomatoes etc.

I’m sure we will have to make adjustments, though, in the coming months.

We always now look at the reduced shelf in our local Casino. Today we ate Potatoes at 40% off the normal price. There was now’t wrong with them. In Callac the reduced shelf is in the Top left corner near the vegetables.

    Thanks for the tip.  :good:

In response to JJ’s comment re. Lidl, their shops have very little stockage, in fact their “reserve” isn’t much more than a loading bay, therefore everything they have goes directly on display and with deliveries every day be pretty sure that the produce is going to be fresh.

For those who like a gamble and will eat whatever comes to hand, the “too good to go” application can be pretty good, where you can generally get 12-15€ worth of food for 4-5€.  I’ve had good deals using this from supermarkets, bakers & even a chocolatier. It’s definitely worth a bash.

I always look at the kilo price…rather than the ticket price…it’s amazing how it differs.

    plus …buy seasonal …

i don’t know about others but I never decide what I’m going to cook in advance…I look at what is good that day.
