well I have now had my 4G Internet running for exactly one month (see https://unitedinfrance.com/topic/goodbye-orange-hello-4g-internet/ )
so here is what I have found
it has remained up for the entire month, and at no point has my speed dropped, this is so much better than the orange where the box used to drop out occasionally (usually when I am on a call !), or slow down for no apparent reason.
I used a total of 30Gb in the month, although I was perhaps more aware than usual, so this may be a bit low, but not by much………
the Red-sfr website is a little confusing to start with, but now I have it figured out, it is an easy task each day to check my running total usage for the month
the speed is soooo much faster than the live box, I am so glad I did this, and would heartily recommend it to anyone who has a 4g signal.
yes ordering the sim was a tad tricky, my french is ok, but I had some issues when trying to get the payment to work, and ended up having to call them, which was actually much harder than using their website, but once I got past that hurdle, and activated the sim by entering my pin code (which I had to chase them for), everything else was plain sailing.
once again a big shout out to @BartyB for his advice.
I agree. We’ve been using 4G for a year now and the improvement on the old land line is incredible with speeds up to 92 Mbps instead of 0.5 Mbps, we’ve also saved ourselves 40+ euros a month. It’s been well worth navigating the Free web site to set up the SIM card.
So we are paying about 60 euros a month through Orange for a land line and internet. Last time I checked (a while ago) we were getting 7Mb/s
What’s the setup cost and mothly for say 100Gb/month?
Once we move over for good I’ll need the connection to do some work logged into machines in the UK (probably) so I’d like a fast, cheap connection (wouldn’t we all)
TIA
Martin
Whether it works for you is a personal thing, if you need it for work and you get 7mbs I’d stick with that.
For 4g you have 2 alternatives, pay a higher monthly cost to one of the TelCo’s and rent the modem …….. think in terms of €35/month from SFR or Bouygues
OR
buy the modem for +/- €150 and then pay €20/month to either SFR or Free and depending on coverage you may need an external antenna, think in terms of another €100 for a good one.
For either option the deals are monthly rolling contracts with no minimum period.
As far as speed goes up to around 100mbs down and 50 up BUT that depends on the distance to the mast and while an external antenna will works wonders for down speed it’s not so good up. I have no 4g connection even outdoors at home without an antenna, with the antenna I get 30+mbs down but seldome hit 1mbs up.
Thanks BartyB
I’ll look into it more when I’m next over.
Upload speed is also important for me as I would be sending large CAD files.
Another Question. Could the system be used as a mobile set up (on the road)? I don’t see why not but I might be missing something

We’ve got a 4G wi-fi box (with sim card) from Bouyges-Telecom, and it’s perfect. The signal is constant and strong (not hot on speeds or anything but you can watch a film on Netflix without having to wait for it to buffer), with unlimited usage for 32,99 euros per month.
